Who We Are
The ESA Mining Services Group are designed to provide electrical expertise to mines and related businesses in order to improve safety and productivity, reduce injuries and help businesses better comply with the codes and regulations that govern them. The Mining Services Group has a global reach and can help your business thrive whether you are in Chile, South Africa, Canada or anywhere else in the world.

The Mining Services Group is one arm of The Electrical Safety Authority that provide electrical safety service in a non-regulated enviroment as an advisory service. ESA’s regulation business is a not-for-profit company governed by the Electrical Act in the province of Ontario, Canada. They are accountable to a board of directors comprised of members from the electrical industry, the Provincial Government and the public, and although they are not-for-profit, they must maintain financial self-sustainability. It is the regulations group’s main duty to inspect work sites for potentially hazardous or faulty electrical outlets and wiring.

Using the experience we have gained in the regulated electrical safety environment, we are now able to offer this experience as an advisory service to the Mining Industry. ESA Mining Services personnel have excellent working knowledge of the National Electrical Code, Canadian Electrical Code, the Ontario Electrical Code, M421 and applicable labour regulations. Electrical Safety is our business!

History

With over 80 years of electrical safety experience, ESA’s expertise is now recognized by some of the world’s largest mining organizations. Since June, 2001, our electrical safety advisory services have been available to underground and surface mine sites throughout Ontario and we now offer these services throughout Canada and around the globe. ESA Mining Services Group is now being engaged to review new electrical installations for mining construction projects that improve the safety and reliability of mine site electrical systems. Through an association with ESA’s other non- regulated group, Field Evaluations, we are able to provide a full range of field evaluation of any electrical equipment that will be installed in a mine.

Situation in Mines Today

Today’s mines often have electrical systems that do not comply with minimum operational standards. Electrical systems have evolved rapidly into becoming the backbone of mining operations and electrical risk management programs are not keeping pace. Often times it is because the applicable electrical safety codes as “Good Electrical Practice” are not well understood. Other problems arise from engineering, electrical and instrumentation personnel not being knowledgeable of applicable standards; unapproved equipment being sold by vendors to mine sites; and contractors introducing electrical deficiencies into the systems.

Mission

ESA Mining Group Mission Statement:
To provide the mining and aggregate industries access to the Electrical Safety Authority’s electrical safety heritage, thus reducing electrical fatalities and contacts, and improving the integrity of electrical systems related to the mining process.
